Crude-oil tank bottoms are typically high in hydrocarbons-a valuable raw material if recovered and recycled back to the refining process. When crude tanks are cleaned, the sludge first must be removed. Traditional sludge-removal methods do not fully recover the hydrocarbons. Also sludge removing process requires so much impalement costs and a long time to flammable gas out of the tank before starting the activity. On the other hand, Sludge-removal by human is very dangerous and incidental that unfortunately today is a most common method.
Our ROV tank dredging robot is an automated, mobile and modular, non-man entry oil tank cleaning system. This robot has been designed in response to a challenge introduced by Amirkabir University in Tehran. The basis to design this robot in ability to dredge tank surfaces which are under fluid pressure. Advanced technologies such as positioning, environment recognition, antistatic materials, anti-spark materials, and pneumatic drives have been used in designing different parts of this robot. However, due to investment problems, its production has stopped in prototyping stage.
